Madison is a city and also the county seat of Madison County in the US state of Florida with 2843 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Madison is located around 80 km east of Tallahassee .

history

The railroad era began in Madison in 1861 when the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad completed a line from Tallahassee to Lake City . In the 1880s, the Florida, Midland and Georgia Railroad built a line from Madison to Clyattville , but it was closed in 1972.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 2843 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 1355 households. The population density was 430.8 inh / km². 30.8% of the population identified themselves as whites, 66.0% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 0.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 1.4% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 35.1% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 27.0% of all households. 63.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.43 people and the average family size was 3.06 people.

30.1% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 24.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 44.8% of the population were male and 55.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 19,985, with 42.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 96.01% of the population and 3.99% spoke Spanish .

Madison is crossed by US Highway 90 ( SR 10 ) and Florida State Roads 14 , 53 and 145 . The nearest airports are in Georgia located Valdosta Regional Airport (40 km north) and the Tallahassee International Airport (around 100 km to the west).

Until 2005, the Madison station was a station of the Sunset Limited of the Amtrak railway company from Orlando to Los Angeles . However, after the effects of Hurricane Katrina , the line was shortened to the New Orleans - Los Angeles route. Since then, the only rail transport has consisted of goods transports, which are carried out by the railway company CSX Transportation .

The crime rate in 2010 was 646 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were two rapes, four robberies, 34 assaults, 72 break-ins, 142 thefts and four car thefts.
