The Lake Mitchell (also: South Edge dam or Quaid's dam ) is a dam in northeastern Australian state of Queensland on the upper reaches of the Mitchell River .

The lake 26 kilometers north of Mareeba has a capacity of 129 million cubic meters and covers an area of 32.9 square kilometers.

history

The reservoir has remained unused since its completion in 1986. It was built by the Southedge Daintree Pastoral Company and still belongs to them today.

Environmentalists write that the dam was built without a permit. Because it serves purely private interests and has harmful effects on the ecosystem of the entire river, they demand that it be removed and the natural flow of water enabled again.
