Lake Murray is a reservoir in San Diego County in Southern California . The lake is the habitat of a large number of bird species. The lake is located in Mission Trails Regional Park , the largest urban park in California. At the maximum water level is 29 meters. When the lake is completely filled, the water surface is 69.2 hectares and the coastline is 5.1 kilometers. The lake is south of San Diego's highest point, Cowles Mountain .
history
The reservoir was built in 1894 with a simple earth wall and was known at the time as La Mesa Reservoir. After the 1916 flood in San Diego County, the reservoir was the primary source of water for the city of San Diego. In 1919 the dam was enlarged, thereby increasing the capacity of the reservoir. In 1924 the name was renamed to the current name, after James A. Murray, one of the investors in the operating company Cuyamaca Water Company . The company and the lake were sold to La Mesa, Lemon Grove and Spring Valley Irrigation District in 1926. Who sold it to the City of San Diego 6 years later in 1932.

201 different bird species have been spotted, including flocks of the endangered tri-colored blackbird .
Largemouth bass, sunfish, catfish, trout and carp are found in the lake.
free time activities
The reservoir is a popular recreational area in San Diego. It is particularly popular with hikers, cyclists and joggers. The dam can be visited up to a viewing platform. In addition, it is possible to navigate the water with boats, canoes, kayaks and rubber dinghies. Fishing is also allowed and there are various picnic tables and barbecue areas around the lake.
