The Lake Street Bridge is a reinforced concrete - arch bridge , which the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Paul spans. It runs in an east-west direction and connects Lake Street in Minneapolis with Marshall Avenue in St. Paul. That is why it is usually referred to as the Marshall Avenue Bridge in St. Paul . The structure was designed by Howard, Needles, Tammen, and Bergendoff .

The old bridge from 1889

Today's Lake Street Bridge replaced the previous half-timbered structure , which was built in 1889 and at the time of the new construction - after the Eads Bridge in St. Louis , Missouri from 1874 - was the second oldest connection across the river still in use. The Minneapolis Tribune described the new building as a "stupid extravaganza" because seven bridges already crossed the river in the area of the Twin Cities . However, the Lake Street Bridge became a major link between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Before the freeway system came into being, it led US Highway 212 over the Mississippi River.

When construction began in 1989, one half of the bridge was built. The old bridge was still in operation during this construction phase. However, an accident delayed the new building. The auxiliary structure for one of the arches collapsed and killed one of the construction workers. The old structure will be demolished by blasting it . The first attempt failed and a few weeks later a second demolition with a stronger explosive charge had to follow.
