The Intercity Bridge , commonly referred to as the Ford Parkway Bridge and 46th Street Bridge , is a concrete covered arch bridge in Minnesota that spans the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Paul . It connects 46th Street in Minneapolis with Ford Parkway in St. Paul. The bridge has significant historical significance because it is one of the largest concrete bridges ever erected in Minnesota. It was designed by Martin Sigvart Grytbak and built by James O. Heyworth, Inc. 1925–1927. In 1989 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places . It is notable because, along with Franklin Avenue Bridge , Third Avenue Bridge , Tenth Avenue Bridge, and Robert Street Bridge, it is one of the monumental ribbed arch bridges that span the high banks of the river between the two cities.

The bridge originally served as a feeder to Ford's assembly plant in Minneapolis-St. Paul so that Minneapolis residents could easily access the facility. The move was expected to covet the Highland Park area of St. Paul. As part of the planned project, St. Paul expanded Edsel Avenue and renamed it Ford Parkway. The bridge project was determined by a committee of politicians and engineers from Minneapolis and St. Paul, chaired by Charles M. Babcock , Minnesota's first highways commissioner. However, as a result of the Great Depression and the growth in Minneapolis, the expected development did not take place and it was not until after World War II before the desired growth occurred in Highland Park.

1972–1973 the bridge deck was renewed and widened; however, this did not affect the historical significance. In 2004 the structure was rebuilt from the bridge arches upwards. The new building received an award from the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers in 2006.
