Salt lake , temporary lake |
Lake Torrens is the second largest salt lake in Australia with an area of about 5750 km² and is located in the state of South Australia . It lies to the west of, partially parallel to the Flinders Range and is separated from the northernmost foothills of the Spencergolf by an isthmus only 31 km wide . In 1991 the lake and its shores were declared Lake Torrens National Park .
In the past 20th century the lake has only filled with water once. A project to connect the lake with the sea was not carried out because it is too high (30 m above sea level). It was discovered in 1839 by the British explorer Edward John Eyre , who was looking for land to settle. He named him after the chairman of the Colonizers Commissioners for South Australia, Robert Torrens .
The lake is located about 431 km north of Adelaide , has a length of about 200 km and a width of about 50 km.
