The Lake of Menteith ( Gaelic : Loch Innis Mo Cholmaig ) is a lake (loch) in Scotland , which is in the Carse of Stirling, the floodplain of the upper reaches of the rivers Forth and Teith , in front of Stirling . The more common Scottish name Loch of Menteith was used until the early 19th century . In the Blaeu Atlas of Scotland from 1654 it is referred to as Loch Inche mahumo . The only settlement on the lake is Port of Menteith .

There are a large number of small islands in the hole. On the largest, Inchmahome , is Inchmahome Priory , an old monastery . The priory served Mary Queen of Scots as a refuge in 1547. She was only four years old at the time and stayed there for three weeks after the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh (September 10, 1547), which ended in a heavy defeat for the Scots .

The lake can freeze over completely in exceptionally cold winters. When the ice is thick enough, an outdoor curling tournament called The Bonspiel or Grand Match takes place on the lake. Thousands of curlers attend the event, although it is irregular and infrequent. The last big game took place in 1979. The ticket game planned for 2010 was canceled for security reasons.

It is often said that the Lake of Menteith is the only lake in Scotland to be called a lake . In fact, there are others, including four small man-made lakes: Pressmennan Lake , Lake of the Hirsel , Lake Louise (on the grounds of Skibo Castle ), Raith Lake in Kirkcaldy, and Cally Lake (near the Gatehouse of Fleet ). There is also a sea bay near Kirkcudbright known as Manxmans Lake . Almost all of the other major still waters in Scotland are known as lochs .
