Menteith or Monteith ( Gael . Tèadhaich ) is an area south of Perthshire in Scotland .

history

It is almost congruent with the territory between the two rivers Teith and Forth . The region is named after the Teith, the exact etymology is unclear. Early forms are Meneted , Maneteth, and Meneteth .

The area was first mentioned as the Mormaerdom of Menteith and Gille Críst, Earl of Menteith was the first known Mormaer . The lands and the county went to Walter Comyn and his wife Isabella, Countess of Menteith. Then they came to the House of Stuart through Isabella's sister Mary I, Countess of Menteith . Ultimately it fell to the Grahams, whose line died out in 1694.

Lake of Menteith

The Lake of Menteith is 24 miles south of Loch Venachar . It is 14 miles long and a mile wide and is home to three islands. On Inchmahome ( Innis MoCholmaig , Island of St. Colmaig) stand the ruins of Inchmahome Priory , an Augustian priory founded by Walter Comyn in 1238 and built in the early English style with an ornate western door. Mary Queen of Scots lived on the island for a few weeks from the age of four until she left for Dumbarton Castle and France in 1548. On Inch Talla the ruins of the tower are the first Earl of Menteith from the year 1428. The village of Port of Menteith is located on the north shore of the lake.
