history
Lakeland's story begins with German immigrants who settled in the Sheboygan, Wisconsin area in 1847. From the beginning, these pioneers cared about the education of their children and adolescents. As a result, they finally founded the so-called Missionshaus (also called Mission House in English) in 1862, a combination of academy and seminar for the secondary education of young people and the training of Evangelical Reformed pastors. Therefore, the curriculum was initially focused primarily on the liberal arts and the subsequent study of theology. Most of the early students subsequently became pastors in German Reformed congregations in many parts of America.
By the late 19th century, enrollment was no longer reserved for later pastors, and the college offered a much larger number of courses. Highly qualified professors set a very high quality standard from the beginning, which has been maintained until today.
In 1956, due to an increasing change in the focus of study away from church education, the name was changed: Mission House College became Lakeland College and the associated seminary in 1962 in Minneapolis / St. Paul relocated where it became independent as the United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. The relationship with the successor organization of the founding church, the United Church of Christ , still exists today.
Lakeland pioneered adult education in the 1970s. Today Lakeland's evening and online program, with over 2000 students, is larger than the traditional study program on the main campus.
In 1990 a branch office was set up in Tokyo, Japan, where Japanese and US students study together for two years.
In 2016, Lakeland College decided to change the official name of the college to Lakeland University to reflect the breadth and variety of courses on offer.
