biography
Lalthanhawla was born during the time of British India in the then princely state of Mizoram as the son of Hmartawnphunga Sailo and Lalsawmliani Chawngthu. His family belongs to the Christian religious community .
After attending school, he studied and earned a BA from Pachhunga University College in 1964 . For a short time he worked as an employee of the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank before he joined the revolutionary underground organization Mizo National Front (MNF) in 1966, at the age of 24, which sought extensive autonomy or independence from Mizoram and the supposed "foreign rule of India “Fought. However, he was arrested and spent a year in prison in Silchar ( Assam ) in 1966/67 . After the release, Lalthanhawla changed his political direction and joined the Congress Party . In 1973 he was elected local Congress Party President in Mizoram, an office he still holds today. He was one of the pioneers who built the party organization of the Congress Party in Mizoram.
The domestic political situation in Mizoram calmed down after the country was separated from the state of Assam in 1973 and gained the status of a Union Territory . 1987, after a CPA (Mizoram Peace Accord) , Mizoram received the status of the State of and MNF transformed into a regular party.
Lalthanhawla won a parliamentary mandate for the first time in the election to parliament of Mizoram in 1978, and was able to maintain this in almost all elections since then (with the exception of 1998) in various constituencies. The 1984 election was won by the Congress Party with 39.8% of the vote and then Lalthanhawla was Chief Minister from May 5, 1984 to August 20, 1986. The next election in 1987 in the new state was won by the MNF. However, the subsequent MNF government did not last long. In the new elections in 1989, the Congress Party again won a majority of the seats, Lalthanhawla became Chief Minister for the second time and served until 1993. His third term as Chief Minister lasted from 1993 to 1998 at the head of a coalition government made up of the Congress Party and Janata Dal . After a ten-year hiatus with an MNF government under Zoramthanga , the Congress Party won the 2008 election and Lalthanhawla was Chief Minister from 2008 to 2013. The 2013 election was also won by the Congress Party, which received 34 of 40 seats with 44.6% of the vote. On December 9, 2013, he was elected Chief Minister for the fifth time.
In an interview in Singapore in 2009 , Lalthanhawla complained that he was a “victim of racism” in India. In India he would be asked if he was really Indian. In South India he was asked if he was from Nepal . These people would forget that India was made up of three races, the Aryans , the Dravids and "we in the northeast ". Back in India, Lalthanhawla denied having used the term "racism".
Since December 15, 2018, Zoramthanga has been Chief Minister of Mizoram again.
