Lambina opal field

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lambina opal field in Australia, along with Mintabie , Coober Pedy and Lightning Ridge, is one of the largest opal finds in the state of South Australia .

The Lambina Opal Field is located approximately 100 kilometers south of the Northern Territory border in the state of South Australia , 58 kilometers northeast of Marla and 10 kilometers south of the Lambina Homestead . The opal mines can be reached via a junction from the Stuart Highway in Marla.

There were opal finds there as early as the 1930s, but it was not reported until 1956. The opal fields are located in a rural area in which dairy farming is carried out, so mining development and approval was problematic. Opal mining developed after the Aborigines of the Antakirinja and Yunkunjatja and the South Australia Opal Miners Association reached a contractual agreement on July 1, 1998 for the construction of opal mines. Certain restrictions were associated with the mining permit, such as a ban on permanent settlement by opal seekers. Nevertheless, there was an entry of 200 claims in the following four months after the contract was signed.
