description

Lamprologus congoensis has an elongated body and is a maximum of 13 cm long. The body height is a quarter of the standard length . The fish are gray to lavender in color, the belly, the base of the pelvic fins and the lower edge of the eyes are yellowish. There is a dark, flaky spot on the gill cover. There are five or six vertical stripes on the sides of the body. The free edges of the scales are dark, so that the scales together form a net-like pattern. In adult males, there are iridescent spots on the back of most of the scales on the sides of the body. Dorsal, anal and caudal fins show oblique, black stripes. Small, whitish spots lie between the rays of the dorsal, anal and caudal fin. Lamprologus congoensis has 30 to 31 vertebrae. The teeth in both jaws are single-pointed, curved and sharp. At the very front there are 6 to 8 greatly enlarged, curved teeth. The small teeth of the inner rows of teeth are arranged in 6 to 8 irregular rows. The bowel is short and half the length of the standard length. The remains of spiders and insects were found there during gastric and intestinal examinations.
