The Merzig Regional Hospital was a psychiatric hospital in Merzig , Saarland . In the course of the psychiatry reform, it was dissolved in 1998.

history

The institution was founded in 1876 as the " Rhenish Provincial Insane Asylum Merzig ". It belonged to the administrative district of Trier in the Prussian Rhine province . Within the walled area there was its own farm, church, power station and cemetery.

During the National Socialist era , 800 patients were transferred to other institutions, only 80 of whom came back.

In the meantime the institution had about 1000 beds. Wolfgang Werner , the medical director of the house since 1978, advocated the humanization of psychiatry as well as local care for mentally ill people in Saarland. This led to the first complete dissolution of the state hospital in 1998.

The SHG Clinic Merzig and the Saarland Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry (SKFP) are located at this point in Merzig today . The Saarland Psychiatry Museum recalls history.
