Wolfgang Werner (psychiatrist)

Wolfgang Werner (born October 24, 1939 in Niederkirchen ) is a German psychiatrist and university professor who has made particular contributions to the decentralization of psychiatry.

Professional background

Wolfgang Werner first studied German and Classical Philology , then medicine . He received his doctorate in 1966 and completed his habilitation in 1974. On October 1, 1978, he became medical director of the regional hospital in Merzig , which at that time housed 900 patients in 39 wards. Wolfgang Werner campaigned for a humanization of psychiatry as well as local care for mentally ill people in Saarland , which in 1998 led to the first complete dissolution of a state hospital in the Federal Republic of Germany .

On July 12, 2000, he was appointed honorary professor in the psychology department of the University of Trier .

Social and cultural engagement

In addition to his work as a doctor, Wolfgang Werner is committed to various social and cultural projects, e.g. B. for the association for the promotion of Saarland literature , the supporting association stones at the border , the Saarland psychiatry foundation or a multi-generation model project in Merzig districts.

Honors

In 1999 Wolfgang Werner was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit for his services to the psychiatric reform.
