history

The court theater burned down in 1924

Immediately behind the current location of the theater there was a riding house since 1755, built by Martin Seydel , which was converted into a comedy and redoute house in 1775 and was called the Mecklenburgisch-Strelitzsches Hoftheater from 1779 . After the end of the monarchy, the theater was renamed Landestheater Neustrelitz in 1919 . In January 1924, the building, which was then used as a theater for 150 years, burned to the ground.

According to plans by the renowned Munich theater architect Max Littmann , a new building was then constructed by the Free State of Mecklenburg-Strelitz from 1925 to 1928 . Other architects involved were Heinrich Düll, Georg Pezold, Hugo Schimmel, May Sollinger and Matthias Teller. The house was opened on June 2, 1928 with Mozart's opera “ Così fan tutte ”.

On April 29, 1945 the Red Army occupied Neustrelitz; In the night of April 30, 1945 , the theater was destroyed by arson in addition to Neustrelitz Castle and other buildings. 1952–1954 it was rebuilt by the architects G. Böckler, E. Conell and F. Torka while maintaining the exterior; the interior was built in modern forms.

Friedrich Wolf bust in front of the theater

After the war, the Mecklenburg State Theater played under the most difficult conditions in the hall of a former hotel until 1954. In 1954 the theater was reopened under the name Friedrich-Wolf-Theater . In front of the theater there is still a bronze bust of the name giver, the writer and communist politician Friedrich Wolf, who died in 1953 .

From 1991 the theater was called State Theater Mecklenburg . Since 2000 it has been the main stage as the Landestheater Neustrelitz and the seat of the directorship of Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg / Neustrelitz , which also plays the Schauspielhaus Neubrandenburg . In 2010, fire protection and structural deficits in the Landestheater Neustrelitz were remedied in a major construction project.
