The building complex on Schloßstraße, which connects the central market square and the castle district, looks back on a long history of public use. From 1748 to 1795, the preserved courtyard building No. 12 housed the ducal mint of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. 1869 was the property of the North German Confederation , since 1871 imperial realm post , sold in 1898 also acquired the neighboring house no. 13,. Between 1899 and 1901, a new building inspired by neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic architectural forms was built on these two areas - the Imperial Post Office. It was a first class post office , which simultaneously provided telephone and telegraph services. The building is an eleven- axis two -storey eaves house with two gable risers in the second and tenth axes. There is a double-leaf entrance door on both sides. Large arched windows on the ground floor, double arched windows on the upper floor and triple windows in the risalits structure the facade of the building facing Schlossstrasse. Both risalits are adorned with mosaics above the windows on the first floor: in the left the dates 1899 to 1901 can be read in gold letters, above the window in the right gable risalit two golden post horns symbolize the postal system and two lightning bolts symbolize the telegraph and communications system. In 1928 the gateway was widened. In 1933 the interior was rebuilt, but the counter hall was not affected.

The function of the post office and telecommunications office was retained in the building until 2000. Until 2003, the delivery area was still housed here. In 2008 the city of Neustrelitz acquired the area. In 2011, a cooperation agreement was concluded with the neighboring communities for inclusion in the federal city promotion program. In the years that followed, the post office was rebuilt in accordance with the preservation order; In the courtyard, a new building with reading rooms and exhibition rooms was built according to plans by the Berlin office BHBVT .
