Landmaster of Prussia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Landmeister of Prussia was an office in the Teutonic Order that existed from 1230 to 1309 . The Landmeister administered the coming of the Teutonic Order in Prussia .

The office was created simultaneously with the beginning of the conquest and violent proselytizing of the Prussians in the summer of 1230. The first Landmeister, Hermann von Balk , received the Kulmer Land from Duke Konrad of Mazovia as the nucleus of the Teutonic Order State in Prussia and began to advance north along the Vistula . His successors completed the conquest of the country with considerable setbacks and erected "permanent houses" , the forerunners of the later brick order castles, to protect the districts and hold down rebellious Prussians . The last Landmeister of Prussia to reside in Elbing was Heinrich von Plötzke . In 1309, after Plötzke's death, the office was combined with that of Grand Master Siegfried von Feuchtwangen , who now resided in the Marienburg .
