Hermann Schreiber (historian)
Hermann Schreiber (born May 4, 1920 in Wiener Neustadt , † May 4, 2014 in Munich ) was an Austrian historian and writer .
Life
Hermann Schreiber was born the son of a bookseller. He studied German literature , philosophy and aesthetics in Vienna and in 1944 when Josef Nadler with a thesis on Gerhart Hauptmann for Dr. phil. PhD. After the end of the Second World War he worked initially as a lecturer and editor of the magazines Plan and Österreichisches Tagebuch , later as editor-in-chief of Geistige France and partner in a publishing house. From 1948 to 1954, Schreiber was also the Vienna representative and literary agent of the Daily Mirror .
From 1949 he also worked as a freelance writer . In 1951 his first novel was published. Since then he has written over 100 novels, essays , short stories and non-fiction books , some under the pseudonyms Ludwig Bühnau, Ludwig Berneck, Ludwig Barring and Lujo Bassermann . Schreiber became known to a broad readership primarily through his popular scientific works on historical topics and people, many of which became bestsellers . He also wrote biographies (including August the Strong ), country stories ( The History of Scotland ) and anthologies ( The New World ) as well as general historical treatises ( The Huns ). In 2000 Schreiber's memoirs were published under the title Books, Women, Books .
He also worked as a translator of French literature, a. a. by Georges Simenon .
Hermann Schreiber was the brother of the writer Georg Schreiber , with whom he also wrote some books.
