The landscape protection area Berumerfehner-Meerhusener Moor is a landscape protection area consisting of four spatially separated areas in parts of the districts of Aurich and Wittmund of the federal state of Lower Saxony. The area is located in parts of the municipalities of Großheide , the integrated municipality of Holtriem and the city of Aurich in East Frisia . In total, it is 17.26 square kilometers. The area was designated on April 12, 1973 as a landscape protection area (LSG). Embedded in the LSG is the 1180 hectare nature reserve Ewiges Meer and its surroundings .

Description of the area

The area lies in the transition area between the Dietrichsfelder and Ochtersumer Geest with the sand dome on the edge of the Tannenhausen bathing lake and the Tannenhausen and Meerhusener moors. It is characterized by an open to semi-open landscape and consists mainly of grassland and in places hedges and hedgerows. The so-called Königskeil is also part of the protected area . There, Aurich-Wiesmoor-Torfvertriebs GmbH operated peat extraction in the northern area until 2013. All facilities were then dismantled. The excavated areas were rewetted and renatured to a residual peat thickness of at least 50 cm. In the meantime, peat moss has grown on many of the former mining areas. The pitted parts of the southern sub-area have been afforested since 1974. The resulting forest, which is around 3.5 square kilometers in size today, is part of the Lower Saxony State Forests and is looked after by the Aurich district forester in the Meerhusen Forestry Office.
