The landscape protection area Dreescher Gehölz (also known as "Dreesche" ) is a landscape protection area in the district of Aurich in the federal state of Lower Saxony . It bears the number LSG AUR 00013 and is located entirely in the area of the community of Großheide .

Description of the area

The landscape protection area, designated in 1940, covers an area of 0.29 square kilometers in the transition area between the Seemarsch and the Geest . It is an old settlement area on which potsherds from the 2nd to 4th centuries AD were found. In the early 12th century, the Bremen church in the Arler area had two Meierhöfe, which can be identified as early as 1106. The former Dreesche farm is assumed to be one of these Meier farms (which is not identical to today's farm). A castle is said to have stood in the forest, of which the moat and zingel were still preserved in the 19th century. In the 16th century the farm belonged to the East Frisian Count House. The name of the Arler subsidiary Dreesche, which was first mentioned in 1240, gave it its name. Its designation means "undeveloped land" or undeveloped "grassland".

Flora and fauna

The area consists mainly of mixed forest. Beech, oak and birch dominate the forest. You can also find spruce, fir and yew trees as well as thuja as ornamental trees. A border of different types of shrub surrounds the forest, which is partly used for forestry. The area serves numerous insects, small mammals, birds of prey, owls and small birds as a breeding and feeding habitat.

In the opinion of the district of Aurich, the influence of the prevailing westerly winds on the appearance of the wood is characteristic of the landscape. The conifers should be removed gradually.

Protection purpose

The general protection purpose is the "preservation and development of an attractive cultural landscape with small parceled areas, hedgerows and unpaved sand paths."
