The approximately 8.4 hectare protected landscape area In der Bach / Am Vorberg is located in the Volmarstein district of Wetter (Ruhr) in North Rhine-Westphalia. It includes much of the forested hilltop of formerly Schlossberg called castle hill on which the ruins of the castle Volmarstein are. The landscape protection area was established in 1984 in the course of drawing up the landscape plan for the Ennepe-Ruhr district . In the partial plan for the “Witten – Wetter – Herdecke area” it bears the serial number 2.2.24.

The conservation area is almost completely surrounded by settlement areas in the village of Volmarstein; the village center is in the south of the area. In the east, towards the Ruhraue , the LSG is bounded by Hagener Strasse and the Ruhrtalbahn railway line. Only in the southeast does it change into a small, not protected forest area. There is a difference in altitude of 105 m within the reserve. In the LSG there are the castle ruins with the surrounding green area, a memorial place with memorials for the dead of the last wars ( German war to World War II ) and two residential buildings on Kramerweg.

The forest of the castle hill is dominated by red beech ; There are also other woody plants in the vicinity of settlements and on steep slopes . It can be accessed by some hiking trails. In addition to its recreational function, the forest has an immission control and soil protection function (danger of erosion). In most of the forest areas of the LSG, a clear-cutting ban has been set. In addition, the forest has a protective function for the cultural monument of the castle ruins. The area was protected, among other things, to preserve the forest as a habitat for birds of prey and woodpeckers , because of the beauty of the landscape and its particular importance for recreation.

The LSG designation In der Bach refers to the slope section above the Bachstraße in the northwest of the area. Just like the earlier field name "In der Becke", these names refer to the Heilkenbach , which there, in the Volmarsteiner Bachtal , now flows into the Ruhr with pipes . The name Am Vorberg refers to the southeastern part of the area near the street of the same name with the Burghotel Volmarstein, whose property has been owned by the Vorberg family since 1642.
