The thirteen Danish Landstinge in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, the Landsting was an assembly of free and weapon-bearing men from a certain part of Denmark . Initially the Landstinge had extensive tasks, but then lost their political function to the king and the nobility in the late Middle Ages , but retained their function as legal authority between the king and the individual Hardentingen .

In the Middle Ages Denmark was divided into several parts of the country such as B. Nørrejylland and Sønderjylland (Northern and Southern Jutland) , Zealand and Scania . There were a total of 13 Landstinge. However, in the course of the Middle Ages the Landstinge in Viborg (Nørrejylland), Ringsted (Zealand) and Lund (Scania) emerged as the central ting assemblies.

In Sønderjylland (the later Duchy of Schleswig ) the Landsting took place in Urnehoved. In the 19th century a regional decision-making body was established in Sønderjylland and in the Duchy of Schleswig with the Schleswig State Assembly, one of four provincial assemblies in the entire Danish state .
