The state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1966 took place on July 10, 1966. It was the election for the 6th electoral term of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Election results

The choice was marked by the looming first recession since the existence of the Federal Republic, which hit the Ruhr area particularly hard . The SPD , which was in the opposition at both federal and state level , benefited significantly from this. It became the strongest parliamentary group for the first time and only just missed an absolute majority .

The CDU and FDP , which only had 101 of the 200 seats (previously 110), nevertheless agreed to continue their coalition . In the constituent session of the state parliament on July 25, Franz Meyers did not manage to be re-elected as prime minister in the first ballot. He received 100 votes, the SPD parliamentary group leader Heinz Kühn 99, there was one abstention. In the second ballot, which was held immediately afterwards, the proportion of votes was the same. Meyers was thus elected, because in the second ballot the majority of the members of the state parliament is no longer required to vote, but more than half of the votes cast, with abstentions not counting among the votes cast.

The new CDU / FDP government did not stay in office long. After the SPD announced a vote of no confidence on November 5, 1966, the CDU decided to start coalition negotiations with the SPD. This prompted the FDP to also seek a coalition with the SPD. On December 1, 1966, the SPD parliamentary group decided with 73 to 21 votes for a coalition with the FDP. On December 8, 1966, Heinz Kühn was elected Prime Minister by a constructive vote of no confidence with 112 votes to 85 and the new SPD / FDP cabinet was sworn in on the same day. The CDU remained in the opposition until 2005 .
