State election in North Rhine-Westphalia 1985
The elections to the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia for the 10th electoral period took place on May 12, 1985.
In this state election, the SPD sole government under Prime Minister Johannes Rau stood for re-election. The CDU nominated Bernhard Worms as the top candidate. The SPD received 52.1 percent of the votes cast (1980: 48.4%) - to this day its greatest success in North Rhine-Westphalia. The CDU received 6.7 percentage points less than in the 1980 election.
The SPD NRW could thus continue to govern alone. The SPD election campaign was led by Bodo Hombach , who was still quite unknown at the time .
The FDP returned to the state parliament with 6.0 percent, after failing the five percent hurdle in 1980 with 4.98 percent of the vote. The Greens failed again at the five percent hurdle.
Johannes Rau formed the Rau III cabinet . Some positions remained unchanged (e.g. finance = Diether Posser , interior = Herbert Schnoor , economy = Reimut Jochimsen ). For the first time there was an environment ministry ("Ministry for the Environment, Regional Planning and Agriculture"; Minister: Klaus Matthiesen ). Rau had been Prime Minister since September 1978 ; he remained so until his resignation in May 1998.
