The SPD North Rhine-Westphalia is the state association of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . With around 112,000 members (as of 2018), it is the SPD regional association with the largest number of members. Sebastian Hartmann has been the chairman since June 23, 2018 . In the state parliament , the NRW-SPD is the largest opposition group with 69 members. Before that, she provided the Prime Minister in a coalition with the Greens from 2010 to 2017.
history
In addition to the four district organizations, the regional association was founded at the first regional party conference in Dortmund in 1970.
The party put partly in coalitions with the FDP or the Greens , partly in sole government the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia. During this time the SPD provided the Prime Minister:
- Fritz Steinhoff (1956 to 1958)
- Heinz Kühn (1966 to 1978)
- Johannes Rau (1978 to 1998)
- Wolfgang Clement (1998 to 2002)
- Peer Steinbrück (2002 to 2005)
- Hannelore Kraft (2010 to 2017)

The state party is organized in district associations called regions:
- Western Westphalia region ( administrative districts Münster and Arnsberg )
- Region Niederrhein ( administrative district Düsseldorf )
- Middle Rhine region ( Cologne district )
- Region Ostwestfalen-Lippe ( administrative district Detmold )
Below the districts there are 54 sub-districts (district and city associations) and around 1,400 local associations.

Election results
Local elections
After the Second World War, the local election results of the NRW SPD rose from 33.4% (1946) to 46.6% (1964). Since 1964 they have sunk to their lowest result in 2004 with 31.7%. In the local elections on August 30, 2009 , the party fell below the 30 percent mark for the first time with a 29.4% share of the vote.

In addition to the persons marked, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia also included Fritz Steinhoff from 1956 to 58 (after a coalition change of the FDP and a constructive vote of no confidence in the state parliament) and, after Wolfgang Clement became Federal Minister in 2002, Peer Steinbrück.
