history

Laney was officially founded on September 1st, 1967 by Lyndon Laney, who had decided to build amplifiers for friends. His first customers included guitarists from the Birmingham area such as Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath , who continues to use Laney products to this day. Many of the early amplifiers are still in use today.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Laney offered a small but specialized range of amplifiers. Of particular interest was the LA100BL, a pure tube amplifier that had a more heavy metal-heavy sound than competitors' products at the time. The claim to have more gain while still having a natural tube sound shaped Laneys production in the 1980s. The AOR product line (short for Advanced Overdrive Response ) had an additional level of gain in front of the preamplifier; other companies like Marshall Amplification did not have this factory-made at the time.

Laney's product range today ranges from small transistor amplifiers to 120 watt full tube amps. For the 40th anniversary of the company in 2007, a new guitar amplifier series called Lionheart and a bass amplifier series called Nexus were presented. Both systems are based on tube technology.

Users

Well-known users of Laney products include Paul Gilbert ( Racer X , Mr. Big ), Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth and Joel Stroetzel from Killswitch Engage . So far, Tony Iommi is the only endorser with a signature model that took around two years to develop.
