Langdysse from Helgetoft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Langdysse of Helgetoft (also called Helletofte Langdysse) located on the coast, southwest of Bøstrup on the island of Langeland in Denmark .

It originated in the Neolithic between 3500 and 2800 BC. BC as a megalithic system of the funnel beaker culture (TBK). The approximately 1.8 m high north-south oriented long dyssey measures around 34.0 × 8.0 m. A curb chain of 15 more or less in situ stones up to 1.5 m in height can be seen on both long sides . A chamber lies roughly in the middle of the very heavily overgrown hill.

The stone box

The stone box was discovered by a woman on the west coast in 2019 after a winter storm at Bregnegårdsvej in Helletofte between Rudkøbing and Lohals . A plate on the narrow side had fallen out and bones were visible. When archaeologists examined the box, which was full of earth, they found a pile of bones pressed against the fallen gable stone and at the opposite end the remains of the last burial. It turned out that it consisted of three people lying on top of each other. Layers of the dead showed that collective burials had taken place here. A total of around 200 bones were found, most of which were in excellent condition. Two flattened flint daggers were also found, which were likely burial objects .

The trapezoidal stone box consisted of two large, upright side stones placed between smaller gable stones. It was closed with two cap stones. Above it was a flat mound with a diameter of about 10 meters, the top of which had a layer of stone up to 40 centimeters thick.

Nearby are the passage graves in Helgetoft Fredskov.
