The Long pepper shell ( Abra prismatica ) is a bivalve mollusc of the family of pepper shells (Semelidae). It also occurs in the North Sea.

features

The flattened housing has the same flaps and is up to 26 millimeters long. It is oblong-egg-shaped in outline and has a width / height ratio of 2.1. It is clearly unequal, because the vertebrae are located in the rear half of the case (about 40% of the case length). The rear dorsal edge is short and gives the rear edge of the case an almost sniff-like appearance. The anterior dorsal margin is long and almost straight; it merges into the rounded front edge. The ventral edge is relatively broadly rounded. The case gapes at the rear end. The ligament lies both externally and internally. The external ligament is a small brown band behind the vertebrae. The internal ligament sits in a small, elongated chondrophore . The lock has a small cardinal tooth in the left flap and a very weak anterior and posterior lateral tooth. Two cardinal teeth and a weak anterior and posterior lateral tooth are formed in the right valve. There are two sphincters. The jacket bay is not particularly deep in relation to its length.

The whitish shell is thin-walled and fragile. There are fine concentric lines on the surface. The periostracum is a thin, light brown and shiny or iridescent coating. The name prismatica is derived from it. The inner edge of the case is smooth.

Similar species

The long pepper clam is similar to the shiny pepper clam ( Abra nitida ), but is longer and slimmer (greater length / height ratio), and the vertebrae sit a little further back.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area stretches from Iceland , northern Norway and the Barents Sea along the east Atlantic coasts to Morocco . It is also found in the Mediterranean and the North Sea .

It lives in sandy or muddy-sandy soils from the low water line to about 400 meters water depth.

Taxonomy

The species was first scientifically described in 1808 by George Montagu as Ligula prismatica . Belonging to the genus Abra Lamarck, 1818 is not questioned. MolluscaBase lists six synonyms : Abra fragilis Risso, 1826, Abra milaschevichi Nevesskaja, 1963, Erycina aradae Biondi, 1859, Psammotaea striata OG Costa, 1830 and Syndesmya fragilis Milachewitsch, 1916.
