The Shining pepper shell ( Abra nitida ) is a bivalve mollusc of the family of pepper shells (Semelidae). It also occurs in the North Sea .

features

The slightly unevenly flattened, flattened housing , egg-shaped in outline, can be up to 13 millimeters long. They are slightly unequal, the vertebrae sit well behind the center line in relation to the length of the case. The rear almost straight dorsal margin is shorter than the anterior dorsal margin, but they form an obtuse angle to each other. The rear end is trimmed. The front edge is wide and regularly rounded. It merges into the initially broadly rounded ventral margin, which runs almost straight towards the rear end. The ligament lies internally and externally. The external ligament is a small brown band. The inner ligament sits on an elongated, spoon-like chondrophore . The lock has a small cardinal tooth in the left flap and a very weak anterior and posterior lateral tooth. In the right valve two cardinal teeth and a weak anterior and posterior lateral tooth are developed. There are two sphincters. The mantle bay is very deep and ends roughly in the middle between the vertebra and the anterior sphincter.

The pearlescent, shimmering white shell is thin-walled and fragile. The surface is ornamented with fine concentric lines. The periostracum is only a very thin coating. The inside edge of the housing is smooth.

Similar species

The shiny pepper clam is similar to the long pepper clam ( Abra prismatica ), but is shorter and more compact (smaller length / height ratio 1.9 to 2.1)), and the vertebrae sit a little further towards the center.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the glossy pepper clam stretches from southern Iceland , northern Norway , along the coasts of the eastern Atlantic to Morocco . It is also found in the Mediterranean and the North Sea.

It lives in muddy soils between a few meters and 4600 meters water depth, usually up to about 200 meters water depth.

Taxonomy

The taxon was introduced into literature in 1776 by Otto Friedrich Müller as Mya nitida . Today it is generally placed in the genus Abra Lamarck, 1818. The species appears in the older literature under the younger synonym Abra intermedia (Thompson, 1845).
