The Langelandsfort was a Danish coastal fortress . It was built in 1953 on the southern tip of the island of Langeland in the area of the municipality of Bagenkop .

history

Langelandsfort was a fortress occupied by the Danish Navy until 1993 and is now a museum. From here the Danish Navy monitored the activities of the Warsaw Pact in the western part of the Baltic Sea during the Cold War . It was used to monitor the passage of warships through the Langelangsbelt and to prevent them in the event of war.

The armament consisted of four 150 mm guns. The barrel of these guns came from defunct gun emplacements on the German Atlantic Wall. There were twelve bunkers for protection.

Langelandsfort was the headquarters of the Langelands Marine District (LAM) from 1961 to 1986.

Up to 400 marines were stationed in Holmegård barracks near the fortress. In the 1960s, the workforce was reduced because the fortress lost its importance after the expansion of the West German Federal Navy .

museum

Today Langelandsfort is a museum with the task of explaining the history of the Cold War. Numerous objects such as one of the last submarines of the Danish Navy, the Springeren built in 1964 and used until 1989 , a MiG-23 or a piece of the Berlin Wall are on display. One of the former gun emplacements is open to visitors.

In the event of a war, the Danish state television would have broadcast Danmarks Radio from a fully equipped bunker . The history of the Danish civil defense is presented in an emergency hospital .

A section devoted to the history of the GDR describes the fate of athletes in relation to doping . There is also a copy of the Blücher Order  - the GDR's non-awarded war award.
