Langley Castle is a medieval castle in the village of Langley in the south Tyne valley , about three miles south of the village of Haydon Bridge in the English county of Northumberland . The restored Tower House , which has been preserved to this day, was listed by English Heritage as a historical building of the first degree and is now a hotel.

history

In the 12th century, the site of what is now the castle was the seat of the Barons of Tynedale , from whom the Tyndall family descended.

The castle was built in the middle of the 14th century for Thomas de Lucy as a tower house with an H-shaped floor plan and four floors. In 1405 the castle was attacked and badly damaged by the troops of Henry IV during the fight against the Percys and Archbishop Scrope. It remained in ruins until the local historian Cadwallader Bates bought it in 1882 and had it restored. Bates died in 1902, and his widow Josephine continued the restoration. After her death in 1932, the building was initially empty.

During World War II it served as a barracks and then as a girls' school. The Robb family bought the castle in the 1980s and later sold it to the hotel company owned by the American Dr. Madnick, who still owns it today. This company had the castle converted into a luxury hotel surrounded by 40,000 m² of light forest. The hotel is run by A. Phillips.

particularities
