Tynedale was a district in Northumberland , England , named after the River Tyne . The administrative seat was the city of Hexham . Other important places were Corbridge , Haltwhistle , Prudhoe and Wylam . With an area of ​​2219 km² Tynedale was the second largest district of England, only the East Riding of Yorkshire was larger.

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the Urban Districts Hexham and Prudhoe and the Rural Districts Bellingham, Haltwhistle and Hexham. On April 1, 2009, the district was dissolved and the administration transferred to the newly formed Unitary Authority Northumberland.
