The Langmann-Stausee or Speicher Langmann is a reservoir in the communities of Sankt Martin am Wöllmißberg and Edelschrott in the Austrian state of Styria . In addition to the Hirzmann reservoir, it forms one of two dams on the Teigitsch River and supplies the Arnstein and Teigitschmühle power plants with headwaters.

Location and surroundings

The Langmannsperre is almost 78 m below the significantly larger Hirzmann reservoir between the Herzogberg in the south and the Wöllmißberg in the north at 630.5  m above sea level. A. In the course of the water surface, the Teigitsch describes a marked change in direction from southeast to northeast. After the barrier, the river passes a gorge-like section of the valley (Teigitschklamm) and reaches the Arnstein power station . With the Nießenbach, which rises on the western slope of the Schusterbauerkogel, the lake has another rich tributary. A monument on the left bank is dedicated to the former governor and STEWEAG administrative president Anton Rintelen .

The Langmannsperre was built by STEWEAG between 1922 and 1925 under the direction of architect Fritz Haas . The lake serves as a daily storage facility for the Arnstein power plant , which was built in the same period and which is the oldest part of the Teigitsch group and was the largest power plant in Austria when it was completed. For the construction of the dam, several kilometers of field railway tracks and an inclined elevator were built, via which the building material was transported from the Gaisfeld station of the Graz-Köflacher Railway to the construction site.

The 26 m high barrier structure is designed as a gravity dam and has a crown length of 85 m. Orographically on the right , a 5.4 km long pressure tunnel with a diameter of 2.6 m leads to the moated castle above KW Arnstein. At maximum output, the lake would be completely empty after only 5½ hours, which means that water from the Hirzmannsperre has to be constantly replenished.

In contrast to the Hirzmann reservoir, both swimming and boating are prohibited at the Langmannsperre. The lake, which can be reached via two municipal roads, from both St. Martin and Ligist-Unterwald , is very popular with fishermen . While the asphalt road runs along the right bank, the left bank is accessible by a hiking trail. The foot bridge over the dam is accessible at your own risk.
