The long-billed quail reaches a body length of 30 to 35 centimeters. The males weigh about 800 grams, the females an average of 700 grams.
The male has rust-red heads, a rust-red neck and throat. The forehead, the nape of the neck and the top of the head are dark maroon. The chest and the front sides of the body are gray. The rest of the underside of the body is reddish-brown, but brightens up towards the abdomen and under tail-covers. The top of the body is spotted maroon and black. The female resembles the male, but lacks the gray breast. In the female, the entire face, throat and underside of the body are reddish brown.
Distribution area
The long-billed quail is found in the south of Myanmar , on the Thai peninsula and across Malaysia to Sumatra and Borneo . Their preferred habitat are dense bamboo thickets in relatively dry forests. It occurs from sea level to altitudes of 1,500 meters.
Way of life
The way of life of the long-billed quail has not yet been conclusively investigated. It is believed that the pairs stay together all year round and that the long-billed quail is territorial. So far, a nest of this type has only been found on Borneo in February 1934. However, it has already been bred in captivity. The clutch size was two to five eggs and the incubation period lasted 18 to 19 days.
