The long-tailed pigeons ( Reinwardtoena ) are a genus of pigeon birds. The genus occurs exclusively in Southeast Asia and includes only three species. They are related to the cuckoo pigeons and, like them, belong to the subfamily Columbinae . The genus is named after the German natural scientist Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt .

Appearance

Long-tailed pigeons are medium-sized to large pigeon birds and reach a body length between 40 and 50 centimeters. In all three species the tail is long in relation to the body size and the plumage is strongly contrasting in color. In the case of the red-brown Reinwardt pigeon , for example, the top is maroon, the head and neck are light gray. The top of the body of the Black Reinwardt Dove and the Solomon Islands Schopftaube is black, while the face and chest are almost white (Black Reinwardt Dove), or silvery blue-gray to reddish light gray.

All three species have thicker and larger beaks compared to the cuckoo doves . This is particularly pronounced in the Solomon Islands pigeon. In this species, the beak is thicker than in the other two species, and the upper beak is bent downwards like a hook at the tip. The salomon pigeon differs somewhat in its appearance from the other two species and was placed in its own genus Coryphoenas until the 1960s . Their head and neck feathers are greatly elongated and thus resemble the forelock of the Spitzschopftaube ( Ocyphaps lophotes ).

distribution and habitat

Long-tailed pigeons are native to the Solomon Islands , Maluku , New Britain and New Guinea and the neighboring islands. They are forest-dwelling species. The red-brown Reinwardt pigeon occurs in mountain forests up to 3,500 meters above sea level. The Solomon Islands pigeon also lives in hilly forests. In contrast, almost nothing is known about the habitats used by the Black Reinwardt pigeon.

behavior

Like most wild pigeons, the long-tailed pigeons are ground-dwelling. So far, only nests in rock caves or on rocky outcrops are known of the red-brown Reinwardt pigeon. Reliable field observations are lacking for the other two species.

species

The following three species are counted among the long-tailed pigeons:
