The black Reinwardt pigeon ( Reinwardtoena browni ), also called black pigeon, is a comparatively rare species of pigeon birds that is one of the long-tailed pigeons . It belongs to the large species within this genus. The distribution area is the Bismarck Archipelago and the Admiralty Islands .

The black Reinwardt pigeon reaches a body length of up to 45 centimeters, of which 17 to 21.6 centimeters are on the tail. Females remain significantly smaller with a body length of 38.5 centimeters. The wing length is 240 millimeters for the males and 215 millimeters for the females. The beak is 19 millimeters long. The weight is between 279 and 325 grams. The black Reinwardt pigeon is roughly the same size as the red-brown Reinwardt pigeon , but it is somewhat shorter-tailed.

Adult birds

The forehead and face are gray-white, the crown and neck are pearl gray. The feathers of the neck have pale spots on the end of the feather. The mantle, the upper tail cover and the middle pair of control feathers as well as the wings are glossy black-blue, the wing covers are slightly lighter and have shiny feather edges. The three outer control feathers are black-blue with a diffuse darker transverse band and in some individuals also have pale gray tips. The area from the throat to the belly is white and turns gray on the flanks and the under tail-coverts. The iris is red or yellow. The beak is dark gray to brown with a reddish base. The feet and legs are red.

Fledglings

So far, only a few young birds have been observed. These were mostly slate gray.

Distribution area and habitat

The black Reinwardt pigeon occurs in the Bismarck Archipelago and on the Admiralty Islands. The Bismarck Archipelago extends between 2 ° and 6 ° 30 ′ south latitude and 148 ° and 155 ° east longitude. It covers a total area of ​​approx. 49,500 km². The land masses are partly volcanic, partly corallogenic in origin and have elevations of up to 1200 meters. The main islands lie in a semicircle in northeast New Guinea , from which they are separated by the approximately 90 kilometers wide Dampier Strait . Between New Britain and New Ireland runs the St. George Canal from southeast to northwest , at the exit of which the Bismarck Sea borders to the west. In this archipelago, the black Reinwardt pigeon inhabits the islands of Umboi , Duportail , Watom , Duke of York Island , Lavongai , Niolam and the Tabar Islands in addition to New Britain and New Ireland .
