The red-brown Reinwardt pigeon ( Reinwardtoena reinwardtii ) is a species of pigeon birds. It occurs exclusively on some Southeast Asian islands. It is classified as not endangered by the IUCN . There are three subspecies.

Appearance

The red-brown Reinwardt pigeon reaches a body length of up to 52 centimeters. This makes it a very large pigeon, but it only weighs between 208 and 305 grams.

Their relatively long, strongly graduated tail, which accounts for 20.3 to 24.5 centimeters, is striking. The two middle tail feathers are the longest. The head and the underside of the body are white to silvery gray. The top of the body is deep maroon and contrasts strongly with the underside of the body. Hand and arm wings as well as the outer wing covers are black. The beak is strong, if not as strong as that of the Solomon Islands pigeon belonging to the same genus . The beak color is brown. The iris is yellowish white inside and has a red outer ring. The dark circles are pink.

Possible confusion

In the distribution area of the red-brown Reinwardt pigeon , among other things, the Rosabrust cuckoo pigeon occurs, which belongs to the genus of the cuckoo pigeons . Some males of this species have a very pale head and a pale underside and a reddish-brown top. However, the two species differ significantly in their body size, the pink-breasted cuckoo dove only reaches a body length of up to 36 centimeters.

distribution

The distribution area of the red-brown Reinwardt pigeon is New Guinea and the Moluccas as well as adjacent islands. It occurs on Buru , Ambon , Seram , Bacan , Kasiruta , Kayoa , Halmahera and Morotai as well as the islands of Waigeo , Walawati , Yapen , Biak , Kumamba , Kairiru , Manam , Karkar and Goodenough . Their habitat is primary forest and the edge of the forest. Their height distribution extends from the lowlands to an altitude of 3380 meters.

The following subspecies are distinguished. They differ in the color of the head and the underside of the body. There is also a difference in height.

  • R. r. reinwardti (Temminck, 1824) - Moluccas (Morotai, Halmahera, Kayoa, Bacan, Obi, Buru, Ambon, Seram and Seram)
  • R. r. griseotincta EJO Hartert, 1896 - Islands in the west of New Guinea (Misool, Waigeo, Salawati), New Guinea and islands off the coast of New Guinea (Yapen and MIos) through New Guinea and offshore islands of Yapen and Mios Num in Cenderawasih Bay , Manam and Karkar, to D'Entrecasteaux Islands (Goodenough, Fergusson).
  • R. r. brevis JL Peters, 1937 - Biak and Supiori in Cenderawasih Bay . The extent to which a subspecies status is justified for these island forms is still subject to discussion.

Way of life

The red-brown Reinwardt pigeon is a inhabitant of the upper and middle treetops. She rarely gets to the ground. She lives mostly solitary or in pairs. Their diet consists of fruits and seeds. The seeds of various Schefflera species play a special role in their diet . Their breeding time is not tied to any season. The nest is a flat platform made of twigs, stalks and moss and is built in trees or on ledges. The clutch consists of a single egg.
