The pink-breasted cuckoo pigeon ( Macropygia amboinensis ), also simply called the cuckoo pigeon, is a species of pigeon bird that belongs to the cuckoo pigeon . It belongs to the large species within this genus. The distribution area of the Rosabrust Cuckoo Dove are islands of Wallacea and New Guinea. A distinction is made between numerous subspecies, some of which have clear differences in their plumage and whose range is limited to a single island.

The stock situation of the Rosabrust cuckoo pigeon is given as LC IUCN 3 1st svg(= least concern - not endangered).

Appearance

anatomy

The pink-breasted cuckoo pigeon reaches a body length of up to 36 centimeters, of which 17 to 19.2 centimeters are on the tail. The wing length is 165 to 187 millimeters. The beak is 14 to 16 millimeters long. The weight is between 107 and 179 grams. It has the build typical of cuckoo pigeons with a slender body and a long, stepped tail in relation to its size.

male

Forehead, ear covers and face of the male are orange-brown and turn reddish brown on the chin and throat. The parting is a little darker and has a greenish sheen. The coat is gray-brown and shines greenish to purple, depending on the light conditions. On the sides of the neck as well as in the nape of the neck, the plumage has dark stripes. The wings are black-brown, the feathers of the wing covers are lined with dark maroon. The rump and the upper tail covers have a warmer hue than the rest of the plumage on the upper side of the body.

The underside of the body is orange, the coverts under the tail are maroon. The feathers on the chest have light-colored feather tips and a black cross band in front of them, which makes the chest look crosswise. The iris is gray or blue with a red, orange, or yellow ring. The orbital ring is blue-gray. The beak is brown to black.

female

The female's forehead, ear covers and face are maroon without iridescent feathers. The ear-covers are slightly blackish spotted, on the back of the neck they are finely banded black across. As with the male, the plumage of the rump has a warmer shade of brown. On the underside of the body, the females are more pronounced cinnamon-colored than the males.

Fledglings

Fledglings are similar to females, but the feathers on the forehead and on the top of the head have a black base, which makes the head plumage appear more spotted.

Possible confusion

The pink-breasted cuckoo pigeon can be confused with the pygmy cuckoo pigeon , which occupies the same ecological niche in New Guinea. The distribution area of the two species mainly overlaps in New Guinea. However, the dwarf cuckoo dove is much smaller and has a more compact body. The fox-red cuckoo- pigeon occurs like the horse-breasted cuckoo-pigeon on some islands of Wallacea. It is also smaller than the pink-breasted cuckoo-pigeon and the breast plumage is finely spotted, not finely cross-banded as in the pink-breasted cuckoo-pigeon. The manada dove is noticeably darker with a whitish face. The red-brown Reinwardt pigeon , which occurs in New Guinea, among other places, is significantly larger and has longer tail plumage. It is pearl gray to white on the underside of the body. The black Reinwardt pigeon , which occurs in the Bismarck Archipelago , corresponds in body size to the Rosabrust cuckoo pigeon, but has a whitish head.

Distribution area and habitat

Pink-breasted cuckoo dove, Siau

The distribution area of the Rosabrust cuckoo pigeon extends over numerous islands of Wallacea and large parts of New Guinea. A total of 18 subspecies are distinguished, of which the following occur on the following islands:

The Rosabrust cuckoo pigeon inhabits forest edges and light primary forests from the lowlands to altitudes of 1,800 meters in this distribution area. On the islands of the Bismarck Archipelago, it is more common in the lowlands and foothills than in high altitudes.

Way of life

The pink-breasted cuckoo pigeon occurs solitary, in pairs or in small groups of about eight individuals. It only eats fruit and tries to defend fruit-bearing trees against other fruit-eating bird species. The flight is very quick and direct.

The breeding time varies in the area of distribution. The nest is typically a loose platform made of branches, the clutch consists of a single egg.
