Columbinae are a subfamily of the pigeon birds . Species belonging to this subfamily can be found almost all over the world, with the exception of the Arctic and Antarctic. The greatest variety of forms of the Columbinae can be found from South Asia to Australia. This subfamily also includes the five types of pigeons represented in Central Europe ( Turkish pigeon , turtledove , wood pigeon , rock pigeon and stock dove ). The rock pigeon is also the ancestral form of the domestic pigeon .

Appearance

The Columbinae include medium to large species of pigeons. In the field pigeons and the American field pigeons the tail is relatively short compared to the lovebirds . In contrast to the lovebirds, their upper run is featherless. In the two genera of field pigeons, the long-tailed pigeons and the white-faced pigeons, dove- gray-blue to brownish plumage colors predominate. Lovebirds and cuckoo pigeons , on the other hand, have mostly brownish plumage.

One of the species with a body shape that is very different from the other Columbinae species is the Solomons' cocked pigeon , which has a greatly elongated head and neck plumage. These form a crest that is similar to that of the European pigeon . The beak is very thick and the upper beak is bent downwards like a hook at the tip.

distribution and habitat

The American field pigeons are found exclusively in the New World. The distribution area of the lovebirds and the field pigeons, on the other hand, extends from Africa through Europe to Asia and Australia. The long-tailed pigeons and the white-faced pigeons are species of Australasia.

Columbinae species use a wide variety of habitats. Some representatives of this subfamily, such as the red-brown Reinwardttaube, are pronounced mountain forest dwellers. Other species, such as the Kaplachtaube, inhabit arid, open land that is covered with trees and shrubs. The wine-red turtle dove is also an inhabitant of dry savannah and thorn bush areas.
