Lansana Coly

Lansana Coly (born February 15, 1958 ) is a former Senegalese judoka . He was military world champion in 1986 and twice Olympic participant.

Athletic career

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Lansana Coly competed in the open class. In his first fight he was defeated by the Japanese Yasuhiro Yamashita after 27 seconds. In the hope round he lost to the German Arthur Schnabel after 3:40 minutes. In 1986 Coly won the heavyweight division at the military world championships in Brussels, beating the Italian Stefano Venturelli in the final . 1987 Coly retired from the world championships in Essen in his first heavyweight fight against the Finn Juha Salonen .

At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 Lansana Coly competed in the heavyweight division. He lost his first fight against the Japanese Hitoshi Saitō after 1:47 minutes. In the hope round he was eliminated after 2:14 minutes against the Bulgarian Dimitar Saprjanow . In 1990 he won bronze in the heavyweight division again at the military world championships in his native Dakar.
