Lapalux (real Stuart Howard) is a British producer of electronic music . The Essex- based musician released his debut album Nostalchic in 2013. His work is attributed to the IDM and experimental electronic music.

life and career

Stuart Howard claims that he initially played the electric guitar and violin at a young age , but without being particularly serious. He took his first steps with electronic music on the PlayStation . He names IDM and old-school hip-hop as influences , in particular Aphex Twin and Souls of Mischief .

Under the stage name Lapalux (short for "Lap of Luxury") Howard began in 2008 to publish his own music. After the release of his EP Many Faces Out of Focus in 2011, he was signed by Flying Lotus for his label Brainfeeder . After two more EPs, his first album Nostalchic was released there , on which Jenna Andrews and Kerry Leatham appear as guest singers.

Nostalchic received an overall positive response from the critics. For the BBC , Louis Pattison praised Lapalux's handling of elements of contemporary R&B and vocals. He described the music as carefree and psychedelic with a focus on atmospheric elements and compared its approach to that of Squarepusher and The Weeknd , but criticized a tendency to meander. In Pitchfork magazine , Jonah Bromwich gave 7.4 out of ten points and described Lapalux as one of the more accessible producers of the Brainfeeder label with a penchant for pop and soul . According to his description, the music on Nostalchic moved on a ridge between chaos and stability and was characterized by a skillful use of sampling . As a negative point, Bromwich cited a tendency for some pieces to get too chaotic.

In 2015 Lapalux released his second album Lustmore . Juice magazine described the work as a “large-format sound painting” and certified Lapalux a “coherent sound palette” like few other contemporary avant-garde artists. The review by Marcus J. Moore, who only gave 5.9 out of ten points in Pitchfork, was less positive . Moore described the compositions as more direct than those on the previous album, but criticized a lack of coherence and an over-ambitiousness of the producer.
