Largo do Carmo

The Chafariz do Carmo

The Largo do Carmo is a typical small square of the Portuguese capital Lisbon in the old quarter Chiado . In the middle of the square is the Chafariz do Carmo fountain from 1771, surrounded by jacaranda trees that provide shade to the entire area.

Although the area is small, it is of great historical importance. It is located near the ruins of the Convento do Carmo , a former Carmelite monastery from the 14th century, the ruins of which are still visible today. The building was destroyed in the great earthquake in Lisbon on November 1, 1755. It is located on the access road to the Santa Justa Elevator , which connects to lower parts of the city.

Next door to the ruins of the abbey is the headquarters of the National Guard ( Guarda Nacional Republicana ). This building played a key role during the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, as this is where the Portuguese Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano took refuge in order to escape the revolution. With the proclamation of the renunciation of power from the balcony of the building, the end of the dictatorship of the Estado Novo was proclaimed. Every year on April 25th, thousands of people gather here to commemorate the almost bloodless Carnation Revolution in front of the National Guard building.

The square is a popular meeting place for locals, tourists, and street musicians who enjoy the quiet atmosphere with outdoor seating.
