church
The place is important because of the pilgrimage church Virgen de las Nieves ( Virgin of the Snow , the patron saint of La Palma) to the east ( location ). Every five years the miraculous image , a small Madonna from the 14th century, is presented in a solemn procession downhill for around 6.5 kilometers as part of the Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves ("Bajada" = descent) on July 15th Church of El Salvador in the island's capital Santa Cruz and exhibited there. Large celebrations and lantern parades take place in honor of the Mother of God . On August 5th, she will be returned to her church in Las Nieves.
The importance of the Virgen de las Nieves as patron saint of the island is said to go back to an event in 1646: at that time the Tigalate volcano was rumbling, but - according to the islanders - it calmed down because the Virgin let it snow.
According to another legend, a shepherd girl was visited by an apparition for three days. On the third day her father followed her and found a wooden statue for which a chapel was built. In 1646 the current church was built, which a few years later also became the parish church .
