Game of the year 2008 - recommendation list

Lascaux is a card game released in 2007 with an auction mechanism. It was developed by the French game designers Dominique Ehrhard and Michel Lalet , the illustrations come from the German draftsman Harald Lieske . The game is on the recommendation list for Game of the Year 2008 .

Game idea and process

Thematically based Lascaux to the 1940 discovered cave paintings of properties located in France Lascaux Cave . The three to five players bid on cards with various animal drawings as the game progresses. The aim is to collect as many drawings of the same type as possible, as points are only awarded at the end of the game for the largest collections.

The total of 54 playing cards each show one of six animal drawings and symbols in two colors. They are shuffled at the start of the game and placed face down as a pile. Each player also receives auction tokens in all six colors as well as 12 tokens (10 if there are five players), which serve as auction money.

Up to seven cards are revealed and form the display for the first round. Each player decides which color to bid on and places the corresponding auction marker face down in front of them. It is the turn of the players to decide whether they want to continue to bid and place one of their pieces in the middle of the table, or if they fold. If a player drops out, he receives all of the previously deposited pieces and places his auction marker in the middle of the table. When all but one of the players have dropped out, the cards are awarded: In the reverse order of the dropping out, the players reveal their auction markers and receive all cards of the corresponding color. Players who dropped out early sometimes go away empty-handed. Cards that have not been auctioned are supplemented by cards drawn from the stack to make a new display and the next auction round begins.

When all cards from the pile have been auctioned, the evaluation phase follows: players receive points for the most cards of the same type and for pieces in their own supply. The player with the most points wins.

Reviews

Lascaux was included in the list of recommended games for the 2008 Game of the Year . The jury describes it as a “smart, family-friendly game” with a “wonderful” presentation.

The reviews of Lascaux were generally positive. The rules of the game are easy to understand and quickly explained, the presentation is successful and the game offers entertaining entertainment and opportunities for various game strategies. The points of criticism mentioned were the proportion of luck and the lower level of influence, especially with five players, as well as the inadequate differentiation of the animal drawings.

Boomerang (new edition)

In 2010 Lui-même released a new edition of the game under the title Boomerang with a new theme and new game material. The players slip into the role of Aborigines , Australian natives who hunt various animals with boomerangs .

The rules of the game largely correspond to those of Lascaux , with a few changes in detail. For example, the number of colors (hunting areas in Boomerang ) has been reduced from six to five, and the starting player is determined differently in the following rounds.
