Lasiodora parahybana is a species of tarantula . It lives in dry forests and steppes in eastern Brazil , more precisely in the Paraíba area.

features

With a height of nine to ten centimeters, it is one of the largest spiders in the world. It reaches a leg span of up to 30 cm.

The spider has a shaggy appearance with long and thick gray hair. The spider has a basic black color that is a little gray.

behavior

Lasiodora parahybana is an earth-dwelling tarantula . It hides under roots, pieces of bark, stones or fallen leaves. In the colder months as well as during molting and brood care, it retreats into caves that it lines with spider silk.

It produces cocoons with up to 2000 eggs. The newly hatched young animals are therefore usually very small compared to other tarantula species.

The spiders are irritable and put their abdominal - stinging hairs a defense. The spider can also face an attacker with a raised carapace and spread bite claws and thus assume an "imposing position". Most of the time, however, it does not bite, but hits the supposed predator with its front legs.

Habitat

It lives under stones and pieces of bark in dry forests and shrub steppes in eastern Brazil, more precisely in the Paraíba area, which was formerly called Parahyba. This explains the species name.
