Lasipalatsi
The Lasipalatsi ( German Glass Palace ) is a functionalist building on Mannerheimintie main street in the Kamppi district of Helsinki .
Start time
Lasipalatsi was built in central Helsinki in 1936 by the young Finnish architects Viljo Revell , Heimo Riihimäki and Niilo Kokko . The building with its restaurants, offices and a cinema was not originally intended as a permanent construction. The popular shops, above all a general store and an ice cream parlor, as well as the offices of Siemens prevented a demolition. The Bio Rex cinema was at times one of the largest and most important cinemas in Finland .
renovation
In the 1980s, the building was in danger of decay due to neglect. The Lasipalatsi was extensively renovated from 1995 to 1998 with funds from the European Union ( URBAN I joint initiative ). Today it is a media and cultural center with many cafés. The breakfast television of the public broadcaster YLE is recorded there. The cable library is located on the upper floor . Here you can use a laptop you have brought with you to access the Internet free of charge via wireless LAN , or you can use one of the stationary computers (with advance notice). The Cable Library has, due to its innovative concept, a prize money of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will receive. It is open every day of the week except Saturdays.
