The first aerial photographs were taken in 1937 during the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill . Aerial photographs taken during the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948) were used by the British geographer Derek Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey to map them in 1960. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1961 after the Belgian composer Orlandus Lassus ( 1532-1594).
