late-onset

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The English term late-onset (German: "late outbreak") is used in medicine to describe diseases that occur in patients at a particularly late point in time. One speaks, for example, of late-onset type II diabetes ("adult diabetes") if it affects a comparatively old patient.

definition

There is no standard definition for the term late-onset . The period of time when a late-onset is mentioned varies greatly from illness to illness.

One speaks of a late-onset adrenogenital syndrome , for example, if it does not become apparent at birth due to residual activity of the affected enzymes, but only after years due to pseudopuberty, i.e. the premature development of secondary sexual characteristics in primary school age, or even menstrual disorders in adulthood . In contrast, late-onset sepsis is given if the disease occurs after the third day of life. Late-onset asthma is defined from the age of three. Late-onset alcoholics, for example, do not start drinking until they are older, from the age of 45. Often after a significant life event, such as the loss of a life partner.

The opposite of late-onset diseases are early-onset diseases (“early onset”). While genetic predispositions very often play an important role in early-onset diseases , this is not the case with late-onset diseases.
