Latin diocese of Modon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diocese of Modon or Medone ( Latin Dioecesis Mothonensis) was a Latin ( Roman Catholic ) diocese in the city of Methoni in Messenia in the Greek region of Peloponnese . It was established in place of an existing Greek Orthodox diocese as a result of the Fourth Crusade . In 1209 the Principality of Achaea was founded and Modon was placed under the rule of Venice .

After the principality was lost to the Ottoman Empire in 1506, the diocese was dissolved and converted into a titular diocese. In 1925 and 1933 it was renamed Methone .
