location

The building with five window axes borders on the Upper Gate to the east and the city fortifications to the north .

history

The house was built in 1573 as a chaplain house and Latin school . The teacher of this secondary school was the chaplain or second pastor who was employed in the same year and who was also responsible for the field service in Hirschlach . After passing the exam, the students were able to transfer to the Fürstenschule zu Heilsbronn . In 1685 the Latin school was closed due to a lack of students; the fields of the school (one and a half days of meadow work) were assigned to the German School , which was then housed in the building. In 1692 the schoolhouse could no longer be used because it was in disrepair.

It was not renewed until 1765, as indicated by the inscription GBR 1765 above the stone portal; the abbreviation probably refers to one of the two mayors at the time, Georg Balthasar Rohm. The German School used the house until it was no longer sufficient due to the increasing number of students (1877: 188); In 1877 the school was relocated to the former margravial office building.

From 1929 to 1960 the local savings bank was housed in the former Latin / German School . Today there are small apartments there that the city of Merkendorf rents.
